Alfa Romeo is bringing us a new model this year, the Tonale. This SUV, which we'll describe briefly, is in a category where several interesting models are already in action.
By analyzing what it offers, we will be looking at who its main rivals are in the market.
First, let's mention that the Tonale is positioned below the Stelvio in the Alfa Romeo lineup. Since the latter is a compact vehicle, it falls into the sub-compact luxury SUV category.
A 1.3-liter turbo engine and plug-in hybrid technology
Mechanically, it will be powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a unit that will be assisted by an electric motor located on the rear axle to provide all-wheel drive. The combined power of the two engines will allow the driver to enjoy a capacity of 285 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The great strength of this vehicle is its plug-in hybrid configuration. Thanks to its 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Tonale will be able to offer a range of 48 kilometers.
This will give it an advantage over the majority of its rivals.
On the German side, there are some strong candidates with the BMW X1/X2, the Audi Q3, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB, not to mention the Mini Countryman, which is part of the BMW empire. Of the batch, only the latter offers a plug-in hybrid configuration. Except that you don't get 48 kilometers out of it, but only about 30. As for the rest, when it comes to refinement, Alfa Romeo is the place to go. The Mini Countryman is a nice vehicle, but it's more of a luxury toy than a luxury product.
The Mercedes-Benz GLB is available in an all-electric version, but you'll be spending an arm and a leg. Really, the best solution is with the Tonale.
Elsewhere, Jaguar offers the E-Pace, an interesting vehicle, but it is not available with an electric range. The same goes for the Buick Encore GX, which is only available with a combustion engine. Lexus also offers a solution with its UX, but this vehicle is really small. It has the merit of being a hybrid and offers excellent fuel economy, but no electric range on that side.
That leaves us with the Volvo XC40. With it, it's gas or electric only. There's no middle ground with a plug-in hybrid.
In light of all this, that's why Tonale is coming up with something new and refreshing in the industry. It has all the tools to make its mark in its niche.
