Alfa Romeo's new hybrid SUV, the Tonale, promises to be revolutionary in several ways, including new tons of new technologies. Among other things, the model will come with its own NFT (nonfungible token) identity, a unique digital assets, that cannot be replaced by anything else and are verified and stored using Blockchain storage technology.
This ensures that the vehicle's system cannot be altered or hacked.
NFTs have become more common for digital artworks lately, and they can be used for everything from music to a website's domain, and now for cars and the automobile industry.
Alfa Romeo says the Tonale's NFT, an industry first, certifies the car at purchase and then essentially records and stores the data during the car's life cycle. It's like writing your model's history as you ride.
"Digitalization is a key part of our world and its digital side. The Tonale is the very first vehicle to hold a non-fungible token on the blockchain. NFTs are based on the same sort of decentralized network that protects your Bitcoin," said Francesco Calcara, Alfa Romeo's head of marketing and communications, at a press briefing. "It stores all the data on the blockchain."
So what's the point?
What could it possibly be used for? Alfa Romeo explains in more detail that the NFT will record the vehicle's data, generating a certificate that can be used to guarantee that the model has been properly maintained, which will have a positive impact on its future value. However, the vehicle must be serviced by a certified Alfa Romeo dealer for the data to be recorded.
Hybridity
The 2023 Tonale will mark the beginning of the end for Alfa Romeo models powered solely by an internal combustion engine.
The more than 110-year-old brand plans to sell electric vehicles exclusively by 2027. By then, the company plans to launch five new or refreshed vehicles, including the brand's first electric vehicle for North America in 2025.
Here, the Tonale will be offered with a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 256 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A plug-in hybrid version equipped with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine developing 272 horsepower and offering an electric range of over 50 kilometers.
Orders for the Tonale will be available in the fourth quarter. The model will arrive in early 2023. Pricing and details on the Canadian lineup are still to come.
