Alfa Romeo Tonale 2023: pictures, videos and price

After the success of its first SUV, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the Italian brand is preparing a new vehicle for 2023. Smaller than the Stelvio, it seeks to compete with models like the Volvo XC40. One of its major assets is its plug-in hybrid engine, which is very popular in Quebec. The name of this new SUV? The Alfa Romeo Tonale 2023.

World Premiere

On February 08, 2022, the new Alfa Romeo Tonale was unveiled.

Relive the event via the video below.

Aesthetically inspired by the brand's history

To design this new compact SUV, the Modena-based brand's designers were inspired by the brand's history and Italian art culture. With clean lines and volumes, the Tonale is meant to be a representation of art and hand-carving.

Both inside and out, the Alfa Romeo Tonale stands out from the competition with a new livery that will once again turn heads on the streets of Montreal.

Plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains

The major asset of the Alfa Romeo Tonale is its plug-in hybrid engine. As the brand's first vehicle equipped with this technology, it fits perfectly with the growing demand for plug-in hybrids in Quebec.

Official details are not yet available for Canada, but based on what is offered in Europe, here are the engines that are expected to be offered in dealerships in Quebec:

280-horsepower plug-in hybrid engine

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is expected to be powered by a 1.3L 4-cylinder turbo engine combined with a 90kW electric motor for a total output of 280 horsepower for this SUV.

The battery would then have a power of 15.5 kWh and be able to give the driver a 100% electric range of 60 kilometers (to be confirmed).

Mild Hybrid Engine

The other motorization offered could be a mild hybrid engine, pairing a thermal engine with a smaller battery than the plug-in hybrid version. This would provide extra power when starting up, which would enhance driving quality and comfort.

Other speculations suggest that we could have the same 2.0L engine offered on the Stelvio and Giulia but with slightly less power (268 horsepower instead of 280).

3 driving modes will be available

Like the Giulia and Stelvio, the Tonale will offer 3 driving modes for drivers of this compact SUV.

Dynamic

Dual Power mode offers maximum performance, guaranteed by the maximum power of both engines.

The EMOZIONE button provides more precise throttle calibration, more efficient braking and quicker steering response.

Neutral

In Neutral mode, the switch between the electric motor and the combustion engine is fully automatic. This is the ideal setting for daily use, where consumption does not compromise performance.

Advanced Efficiency

With the Advanced Efficiency setting, designed for maximum fuel efficiency, the Tonale will use only electric propulsion.

What is the electric range for the Tonale?

As mentioned above, electric range is expected to be around 48 kilometers for the Alfa Romeo Tonale. However, we'll have to wait for confirmation of the official figures, which should be announced shortly.

Note that the Tonale is certainly the first in a long list of vehicles using this hybrid electric technology. Indeed, Alfa Romeo announced in 2021 that the brand will be 100% electric by 2027.

It is likely that the partnership with the Peugeot brand, one of the leaders in the European electric vehicle market through the Stellantis alliance, is a major advantage for Alfa Romeo to reach this goal.

The price of the Alfa Romeo Tonale 2023

The prices for the different versions of the Tonale are the following for Quebec:

- Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint 2023 - 2.0L gasoline: $47,090 (including $2095 transport/preparation)

- Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce 2023 - 2.0L gasoline: $50,085 (includes $2095 transport/preparation)

- Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint 2023 - Plug-in hybrid: $57,090 (includes $2095 transport/preparation)

- Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce 2023 - Plug-in hybrid: $61,085 (including $2095 for transport/preparation)

Is the Tonale eligible for government rebates?

In Quebec and in Canada more generally, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles can receive incentives for purchase or lease. To be eligible, the vehicle's MSRP must be below a certain amount (different rules at the federal and provincial levels) and the battery power must also meet certain conditions.

According to the information in our possession, it seems that the plug-in hybrid versions are eligible for the two government rebates, for a total of $10,000.

However, we will have to wait for the confirmation of the two government programs to validate this information.

Arrival in Montreal expected in Q2 2023

According to the information we have, this new Italian compact SUV should arrive in Montreal in Spring 2023.
